Living in Fontwell

Fontwell lies approximately mid-way between the Cathedral City of Chichester and Arundel, close to Slindon Woods and The Downs and is well known for its national hunt racecourse. The village of Barnham lies approximately one and a half miles to the south offering a good range of shopping facilities plus main line railway station with regular services to London Victoria.

The parish includes the villages of Binsted, Fontwell and Walberton together with Havenwood Park. The population at the 2011 Census was 2,175. Walberton was a thriving village in Saxon times with a population of 35 families mentioned in the Domesday survey. The parish enjoys a fantastic location situated just to the south of the South Downs. The north-east of the parish, Rewell Wood, is within the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty included in the Southdown National Park.

Fontwell Park Racecourse founded by Alfred Day in 1924 was originally built with thatched roofs and is set in 65 acres. It features an oval hurdles course and a figure of eight steeplechase course. In August 2010 a new £6.5m Premier Enclosure was opened and is now the only figure of eight jumps course in the United Kingdom. It has been voted best small race course several years running and has 24 race meetings over the season.

Aside from the famous Racecourse, Fontwell's rich soil has attracted market gardening since 1851 and in the late twentieth century the award winning Denmans Gardens and Plant Centre was opened. It is a popular destination for local residents and visitors with a busy restaurant offering a great selection of meals and snacks throughout the day.

Transport and attractions

Just a stone's throw from Fontwell, nearby Arundel offers great shops, restaurants and other attractions like the castle, wetlands centre and River Arun. Access to Chichester to the west and Arundel to the east is provided by the A27. The A27 road runs along the northern boundary of the parish and provides easy access to Chichester and Worthing for commuters and shoppers. Littlehampton and Bognor Regis are also within easy reach. There is a local bus service, with hourly bus services to Arundel, Barnham, Bognor Regis, and Chichester. Timetables are available from the Post Office in Walberton. Train services run from Barnham Station, about 2 miles away, to Bognor Regis, Bournemouth, Brighton, Littlehampton, London, Portsmouth, Southampton, Swansea, and Winchester.

Amenities in Fontwell

Local residents are very active and the village of Walberton received many "Best Kept Village" awards in the 1970s. There is a Village School which dates from 1732, a Village Hall (built in 1989), two public houses, a Post Office (which contains a tearoom), several shops, including three in Fontwell, as well as a four-star hotel, The Hilton Avisford Park and the village garage in The Street at Walberton. In Fontwell there is a conveniently placed petrol station and a Travelodge Hotel.

Local families send their children to the Walberton & Binsted C of E Primary school and churchgoers attend either The Church of St. Mary in Walberton dating back to Saxon times or Binsted church which is 12th century. During a major restoration in 1868 the interior was found to be covered with wall paintings but, unfortunately these have now faded and only one can be made out. The Baptist chapel, which replaces a meeting house registered in 1714, was opened in 1886.
